4H mentoring

700_000026_001.jpg

My project took place in 2018 and 19. During this time I got to help mentor kids through 4H. I did this by helping them with homework, and various activities. One of their activities was kickball. This allowed me a service opportunity to help and lead the community.

Also, I got to learn how to better help and teach kids. This is a combination of service and leadership in the community. I was able as apart of this mentoring help with some events at SUU. This included, FTC, FLL, and FLL jr. These events help kids get more involved in STEM like competitions which is encouraged in the 4H program.

The Full Story

I had heard of 4H from one of my coworkers, and from some friends. I never heard of 4H before that, and I was curious what it was. I was at a service fair, and saw their booth. I went over and talked to them about opportunities and gave them my information. After that I started going and loved it.

With any project there comes challenges. I was on a time constraint, due to lack of time I needed to find a way to get the hours I needed. There came up  other opportunities that I was able to use for my project. Those opportunities included FTC, and FLL. These are STEM events that kids can do. FTC stand for FIRST technology Challenge, and FLL (FIRST lego league). They work on teams to perform different missions by using robots and legos depending on their age.

Another thing was I had many school assignments and a job. To be able to balance everything was a challenge. There were other personal challenges. However, I will not go into details. In the end any good goal has obstacles that come with it.

By completing my mentoring goal. I was able to see some of the kids outside of 4H and they noticed me and acknowledged me. I felt like that confirmed to me that I was making a difference. I also invited others I knew to come and help. By doing this I was bale to introduce 4-H to other people.

After doing 4H mentoring I got to learn more about leadership in service and mentoring. I noticed that as I went I felt better and I enjoyed it. When ever I got the chance I invited others to come and join. This indicated to me that what I was doing was important to me and worth sharing to others. I got to work with different kinds of kids. Some more quiet, and some more loud with lots of energy. This helped me to be more adaptable and learn how to talk to and help each individual.

"4H pledge. The pledge went like this:
I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service,
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.
